James Bay Gateway

Accessible year round

A Large Doorway

In fact, the James Bay Gateway comprises two attractions. The first one is the arch built in 1968 by the inhabitants of Villebois. It shows the doorway to the James Bay region, exactly where the Abitibi-Témiscamingue ends. The second attraction is the city of Matagami. This city is the entrance to the region, since the road that runs through it, the James Bay Highway, takes you directly to Radisson and the La Grande generating facility. You can also do all kinds of activities in the region, like snowmobiling, hunting, fishing and camping. Matagami is also a multicultural city, since Jamesian, Inuit and Cree live together peacefully.
