Chapais

Million Years of History

Chapais offers visitors all kinds of activities. The Parc de la Chute will make you discover an artificial waterfall and a central park that was formerly used as a gathering place by the English stockholders of the Opémiska Cooper Mine Ltd. You will also find a memorial in honour of the prospector who founded the city of Chapais: Léo Springer. The beautiful commemorative park, built in the memory of the 48 victims of a fire that happened on New Year’s Day 1980, is also worth a stop.

You can also visit other interesting sites like the native cemetery, the Mini Mining Museum and the Place de l’Hôtel de ville (Town Hall). On the banks of Lake Opémiska, you will find a beach and a campground. A boat-launching ramp also gives access to a variety of magnificent natural scenery, such as Mont Opémiska. North of Chapais, Mont Springer stands 538 meters above sea level. From its summit, you will have an extraordinary view on the surrounding area. In the southern part of the city, Lake de la Presqu’île will certainly charm more than one visitor. Not so long ago, scientists discovered that the formation of this lake was due to a meteorite that fell here some 759 millions of year ago.
