A Large City
Chibougamau is the largest community in Northern Quebec. It is renowned as a genuine paradise for fishing and snowmobiling enthusiasts, and the development of its tourism industry is mostly due to the Mining Discovery Centre. Located in the galleries of the former Bruneau Mine, this centre invites you to admire its exhibition to discover the mining industry from yesteryear to nowadays. Dressed in the perfect miner suit, you can tour the different galleries and attend the light and sound show.
Chibougamau also conceals several interesting geomorphologic sites, particularly at the Leblanc, Allard and Souvenir parks. You will find different rock formations that will reveal the secrets of our soil formation. At the Chibougamau Cree Native Centre, you will find ornaments and artefacts as well as a shop where you can buy jewels and clothes made by local Cree artisans.
Outdoor lovers will be pleased by the hiking paths at the Obalski Park. You can either take them by foot, by bike, in snowshoes, skis or snowmobile. These paths will make you discover the boreal forest as well as the wildlife and flora of the Gilman Lake, in which you can even fish. They will also lead you to summits from where you will have an extraordinary view on the village and the lakes of the region. These paths are accessible via the municipal beach or the Chalco Ski Centre.
To discover and tasty local products, visit l’Ungava Gourmande where you will find a vast array of products made with local plants and wild berries. Visitors can also take advantage of the marina, the Regional History Society, the golf course, the beach and all its activities and services, the playground areas, the mini-golf and the bowling alley. It is even possible to go on helicopter rides to see the region form the air.
In winter, dog sledding excursions are very popular. Alaskan du Nord is a company that put 28 dogs and 6 sleighs at your disposal for memorable excursions in the snowy trails. You can even rent a cottage and buy a package including dinner, night and breakfast. Finally, if you like stars, it can be fun to visit the Quasar Planetarium, which is a unique prototype in Quebec. Thanks to its special effects, you will discover some of the northern sky’s constellations.
